The doorbell rang.

“Joe’s here,” her mom called up the stairs.

“Thanks, Mom. See you later!” Orla cried, going downstairs to meet him. “How was your grandma?” she asked Joe as they set off for school.

“Great. She’s lots of fun and a great cook. What happened with Flame? Did your mom and dad let you keep him?” Joe asked eagerly.

“Not exactly. I . . . um . . . told them he belonged to you,” Orla admitted.

Joe’s eyes widened. “What did you do that for?”

“I had to think of something quickly if I wanted to keep Flame without my parents knowing. I’d already shown him to Grace. And you know what she’s like for tattling . . .” She stopped, seeing that Joe looked confused. “Look. All you need to know is that everyone thinks Flame lives with you, but he really lives with me. I’m hiding him in my bedroom.”

Joe’s face cleared. “Cool!” he said admiringly.

“If Grace ever mentions a kitten, just remember that you’re supposed to be Flame’s owner,” Orla said. This is starting to get very complicated, she thought.

She didn’t like telling fibs—and was terrible at it anyway, because she usually forgot what she’d said in the first place. But there was really no choice if she was going to keep Flame safe from his enemies.
